Gerunds
Today we are going to review VERBS that function as NOUNS. REVIEW: Present participles end in -ING (like the word "throwing"). You often see present participles ending verb phrases. In "The children are throwing stones," the verb phrase is "are throwing." In our last grammar homework, we were identifying participial phrases, which begin with present or past participles. Participial phrases contain VERBS that act like ADJECTIVES. NEW CONCEPT: GERUNDS are VERBS that act like NOUNS. A gerund phrase contains adverbs, objects, and prep phrases that complete the thought after the gerund. Because gerunds serve as nouns, they function as any other noun would function--as a simple subject, an object, or complement. Whereas participial phrases could contain a past or present participle, GERUNDS only contain present participles. That means you should look for an -ING word, and if it functions as a noun, it's a gerund! For this assignment, you will be identifying the gerund or gerund phrase in each sentence.
