Reducing Wordiness

Revise each of the following sentences by making the italicized clause the type of phrase or clause indicated in parentheses. Add or delete any words as necessary to make the change.

ellip. = elliptical clause
part. = participial phrase
inf. = infinitive phrase

EXAMPLE 1: I got the idea for this story while I was peeling potatoes. (ellip.)
YOUR ANSWER: I got the idea for this story while peeling potatoes.

EXAMPLE 2: As he approached the curve, the driver slowed down. (part.)
