GT 8 Homework Verbs and Subject Complements
The first 10 questions ask if the verb is linking or action. The last 10 questions ask if there is a PA, PN, or no PA or PN in the sentence. Remember to use your pink or white linking verb sheet. There are only 22 or so linking verb possibilities in the English language. So learning those is key. 2. When you run across a FICKLE verb, substitute AM, IS, or ARE and if you can substitute without changing the meaning, it's linking. Use the Mnemonic FLTSS BRAGS ST to help remember them -- feel, look, taste, sound, smell, become, remain, appear, grow stay, seem turn 3. AM, IS, ARE, WAS, WERE, BE, BEING, BEEN are almost always linking verbs unless they are sweet little helpers. 4. PA or PN have to be in the PREDICATE. The PA describes the subject; the PN renames the subject. Like DOs, PA and PN can't be in prep phrases. Mackenzie is a smart girl. GIRL renames Mackenzie. Mackenzie is smart. SMART describes Mackenzie.
