11.1 Correcting Sentences by Adding or Removing Commas
Directions: Review the comma rules on pp793-795 in Elements of Writing. Then fix the punctuation errors in the following sentences. Rule 25f: Use commas to separate items in a series, including the comma before the coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). -If ALL the items in a series are joined by AND, OR, or NOR, do not use a comma to separate them. -Independent clauses in a series are usually joined by semicolons, but short clauses may be separated with commas. Rule 25g: Use a comma to separate two or more adjectives preceding a noun. Tips: If you can insert AND between the adjectives, use a comma. Another trick is to see whether you can sensibly change the order of the adjectives; if so, use a comma.
