D.O.C. The Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon is a long, deep cut in the land. It is about 278 miles long. It goes across northern Arizona. Stand along the wide, flat rim. Look down into a vast, rugged wilderness. See rocks that are millions of years old. The layers of rock look like colorful, striped pancakes. Some parts of the Grand Canyon have steep, rocky slopes. There are no trees or plants. Other parts have short, stubby trees or plants. Other parts have short, stubby bushes. Columns of rock up to a mile high reach up from the canyon floor. The Vulcan’s Throne is a volcano cone. It rises 567 feet from a rock shelf. The northern rim is the coolest, wettest part of the Grand Canyon. It has harsh, freezing winters. The coldest month is January. There may be up to 130 inches of snow on the ground. The hottest month is July. Less than 6 inches of rain may fall during the hot, dry summer. The Colorado River flows along the bottom of the Grand Canyon. It looks like a slick, winding ribbon! Most of the river is about 50 feet deep. After a rain, the river is a muddy, reddish-brown color. The river has about 25 miles of swift, foaming rapids. The rest of the river flows at a calm, slow pace.
