Quotation Marks

RULES FOR USING QUOTATION MARKS:

Rule 1. Enclose all quoted words within quotation marks.

Rule 2. The first word of a direct quotation begins with a capital letter. When a quotation is broken into two parts, use two sets of quotation marks. Use one capital letter if the quote is one sentence. Use two capital letters if it is two sentences.

Rule 3. Use a comma between the words that introduce the speaker and the words that are quoted. Place the end punctuation or the comma that ends the quotation inside the quotation marks. Begin a new paragraph each time the speaker changes.

Rule 4. Do not use quotation marks with an indirect quotation--that is, a quotation that does not give the speaker's exact words.

Rule 5. Quotation marks are also used to enclose the titles of songs, stories, poems, articles in newspapers and magazines, and chapters in books. They are not used to indicate book titles.
