D.O.C. Life-cycle of a Sunflower

Lifecycle of a sunflower (plant)

1. All sunflowers grow from large seeds. Inside the seed is a tiny plant which begins to grow as soon as it is planted.

2. Roots emerge from the seed and push down through the soil and a green shoot grows upward.

3. The green shoot sprouts through the soil. Small leaves grow on the shoot.

4. The leaves grow bigger. The roots grow longer. The roots take in water and minerals to help the plant grow taller.

5. A large bud forms at the end of the stem and yellow pedals begin to emerge or push out from the stem.

6. All the sunflowers turn to face the sun.

7. Honey bees see the bright yellow petals and come to the flower head to collect pollen.

8. As the bees move from flower to flower they pollinate the plant. Pollination is needed to make seeds.

9. Once the flower is pollinated it will grow seeds. These seeds will fall to the ground and grow into new plants.
