The Theme of Cormier's "The Moustache"

The theme in a story builds as the story proceeds and usually reaches it fullest development toward the end. Themes generally have a "universal" quality, meaning they not only apply to the story itself, but they can apply to pretty much everybody's experience. Through knowing ourselves and life, we can recognize themes in stories and create a "bridge" to the text. After reading and reflecting on Robert Cormier's "The Moustache," decide what you think the theme is. Assert this as a claim in your thesis statement positioned at the end of your introductory paragraph. At the end of your thesis statement, provide "previews" of how you will explore its emergence and development through several stages. Cite your evidence through paraphrasing and a number of brief quotations that you discuss. See the rubric for further guidance.
