Leçon 24 - Passé composé with ÊTRE p.342


ÊTRE may be used as the "helping verb" in the past tense just like AVOIR, but only with certain verbs:

    aller
    arriver
    rentrer
    rester
    venir

Another difference is that the past participle agrees with the subject (gender & number) like this:

    Il est allé
    Ils sont allés
    Elle est allée
    Elles sont allées
