Sherlock Holmes - Reading Comprehension
Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who first appeared in publication in 1887. He is the creation of Scottish-born author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual ability and for his astute observation, deductive reasoning and inference to solve difficult cases.
Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that present Holmes. Almost all his stories are narrated by Holmes's friend and biographer, Dr John H. Watson. The first two stories appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual Magazine in 1887 and Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890, respectively.
Once somebody asked Conan Doyle if there was a real Sherlock Holmes, he always said that Sherlock Holmes was inspired by Dr Joseph Bell, a doctor who lived in London and who was also interested in crime and assisted the police in solving some of them. Like Sherlock Holmes, Bell was noted for drawing large conclusions from the smallest observations.
