PracTest Descubre 1 Lesson 5 DOP #2
A direct object receives the action of the verb DIRECTLY and generally follows the verb in English.
In Spanish, when the direct object is a PERSON or a PET, it is preceded by the "personal a".
Yo busco A mi amigo.
When the DIRECT OBJECT is NOT a PERSON or a PET, but a PLACE, the "personal a" is not needed.
Yo busco el libro.
DIRECT OBJECT PRONOUNS replace DIRECT OBJECT NOUNS:
Ella hace LAS MALETAS ► Ella LAS hace.
El tiene EL CARRO ► El LO tiene.
Direct Object Pronouns
Me= me
Te= you
Lo= him, it (m.)
La= her, it (f.)
Nos = us
Los= them (m.)
Las= them (f.)
1. In affirmative sentences, direct objects generally appear BEFORE THE VERB. "María tiene el libro ► María LO tiene."
2. In negative sentences, the direct object pronoun is placed between NO and the VERB. "Juan no practica el fútbol ► Juan no LO practica.
3. In present progressive and infinitive constructions, the direct object can be placed BEFORE the conjugated verb form, OR ATTACHED to the PRESENT PARTICIPLE or INFINITIVE.
"Quiero ver la película ► LA quiero ver.
OR ► Quiero verLA."
When a pronoun is attached to the present participle, an accent is added to maintain the proper stress:
"Ellos están jugando basquetbol ► Ellos LO están jugando."
OR ► Ellos están jugándoLO.
