(D) Story assessment 1

1Marmalade is a sweet pulpy preserve, normally made of citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruits. Its appearance and taste are similar to that of jam. 2You may wonder then why it is called “marmalade”. Legend says that in the 16th century, Mary Queen of Scots stricken with a serious illness. 3Physicians from all parts of the country came to minister her. 4No traditional treatment was successful and the Queen grew weaker. 5The French phrase Marie est malade “Mary is sick”, became a frequent topic of court gossip. Eventually, a young magician poising as a physician, requested permission to employ his specific formula. 6As a last resort, her discouraged family consented and permitted the magician to feed Mary tablespoons of his jam. 7At the end of one week, she pronounced herself cured and the soothing medicine was named “Mary est Malade” or marmalade.
