Unit 10 Review: Evolution and Phylogeny - Due 4/13 at 11:00 pm - 85% or Better!!!

Learning Targets:
I can:
1. Explain Darwin’s ideas of natural selection and common descent in terms of the process by which they occur (variation, heredity, over production, and survival of the fittest), the effects on the change within, creation of, and relatedness between species. Explain the process of natural selection in terms of the role of competition for resources, survival of the fittest, and adaptations.
2. Defend evolution in terms of identifying evidence for evolution like fossils, anatomy, biochemistry, and biogeography.
3. Determine relatedness between species by creating and interpreting phylogenetic trees in terms of anatomy, common ancestors, fossils, and biochemistry (proteins and DNA)
4. Describe the different kinds of selection (natural, artificial, sexual) in terms of the changes in a species from a distant ancestor.
5. Explain the genetic variation between two populations in terms of the different environments, selection pressures, and reproductive barriers that could lead to speciation.
6. Describe the different patterns of evolution including divergent, convergent, and adaptive radiation, in terms of common ancestry, role of selection pressures, speciation, anatomical outcomes.
7. Explain the role of reproduction in evolution in terms of advantages and disadvantages to asexual and sexual reproductive life cycles.
8. Identify who came up the original classification model, how to write a scientific name using binomial nomenclature and identify the proper order of taxonomic categories.
9. Construct, explain and interpret cladograms and identify different types of characters that are used to construct cladograms.
