KM 1 Ch 10 kennen wissen #2 Practice
"TO KNOW": WISSEN OR KENNEN? "to know" has two German equivalents: wissen and/or kennen. They are not interchangeable, so when to use wissen and when kennen? Kennen is used to express familiarity with people and places. It always takes a direct object. Wissen is used to express a knowledge of facts. It may take a direct object, but more often is used with a relative clause (starting with a question word like ‘wo’, ‘wann’, ‘wer’, etc). wissen is for abstract items, concepts, ideas [= to have an understanding of, to have knowledge of] kennen is for concrete things, persons, places [= to be familiar with, to be aquainted with]
