At high altitudes, air molecules are separated by greater distance as compared to air molecules at surface level ( since air gets thinner with an increase in altitude ) … and sound is basically the vibration of air molecules transferring energy from one molecule to another… due to greater distance between the molecules, the transfer of energy takes more time resulting in a slower speed of sound
