OBJECTIVE: to determine student proficiency level with command of conventions (punctuation, capitalization, spelling) in English language learning. . INSTRUCTIONS: Choose the answer that best fills in the blank for each sentence. Assess your skill without looking up any answers. WHY? #1, 11, 12, 22 - relate to grammar, syntax, & parts of speech (subjects, objects, possession, etc.) of nouns both in English and in Latin (noun cases: Nominative, Genitive, Dative, Accusative, Ablative), including proper and improper nouns. #2-9 relate to apostrophe use in English and Genitive noun case in Latin, and singular and plural, which is called number, in both languages. #23-25 relate to conjugation of verbs in English and translation of Latin verbs. #13-20 relate to commonly mistaken word uses in English, including homonyms (words that sound alike but have different meanings, such as TOO, TO, & TWO and EIGHT & ATE).
