05_2-Das Alphabet_COGNATE Blitz
You already know many German words. Some German words are spelled exactly like English words and have the same meanings: "Ball, Name, Hand, Sofa, warm, wild". Many other German words are spelled almost like English words, differing noly in one or two letters: "Amerika, Fisch, Kaffee, Prinz". In these words and many others, English hard "c" becomes German "k", English "sh" becomes German "sch", and English soft "c" becomes German "z". Some other German cognates have two dots---called "Umlaut"-- over the vowels "a, o, u". This Umlaut changes the pronunciation of the vowel: "Bäcker"- baker, "Öl"-oil, "grün"= green. In this TIMED activity, how many of the following GERMAN words can you understand? Fill the blank with their ENGLISH meaning. Los! Go!
