When asked to express ratios, use this format (X:X or X:X:X) where X represents the number of atoms of an element. For example: Give the ratio of atoms in NaCl. Answer: 1:1 (Because there is one Na and one Cl.) Give the ratio of atoms in Ca3PO4. Answer: 3:1:4 (Because there are three Ca atoms, one P atom, and four O atoms.)
