What is the purpose of this assessment? This self-assessment provides you practice in recognizing the differences in how you refer to, "you," in French. When talking directly to a group of people or an unknown number of people, you always you «vous». When addressing a single individual in a formal situation, you also will address him or her as «vous». However, in casual conversation with just one person, you may address him or her as «tu». The following situations will give you some practice in deciding when you should use «vous» and when you should use «tu» and other expressions of formal vocabulary. It is recommended that you take this assessment until you score at least an 80% to be successful in the next part of the course. Why do I need to master this content? You need to be able to address people correctly in formal and informal situations as well as recognize the difference in addressing a group of people as compared to addressing just one person. Selecting the correct subject pronoun translation for, "you," will help you be understood. It will also help you understand if someone is addressing you in conversation or in writing.
