plane
Our Lady of Victory
The third Element of Art is PLANE.  Planes are also called SHAPEs.  A plane is created by a line in motion, extending in a direction other than it's beginning direction.  A plane can be defined as two-dimensional having length, width or height.  Geometric shapes have mathematic boundaries determining the shape they are within two-dimensions.  Organic shapes are made in nature and are not manmade.  Freeform shapes are shapes that have any kind of boundary that describes the edge of the length and width or height.
Examples of geometric shapes are:
A. circles

B. rectangles

C. squares

D. ovals

E. triangles.

Shapes or Planes are identified by the characteristics of the plane, which is determined by the configuration of the contour line or boundary of a plane.  It is a means by which figures and forms are recognized.  Many shapes have names based on their edge contours, physical attributes, and associations.  Shapes may be caterogorized as geometric, abstract, representational, non representational or symbolic.
