ethicsgroup3 Ethics Group Project-2002
Ethics Group Activity #3

The following is a group project.  It has 2 parts.

Part I:  To create a code of ethics for using technology that your group believes is important to communicate to your peers.

Part II:  To share this information with your peers through a group project.

You will be graded in a number of ways.  First, your group will grade you on how well you contributed to the group and how well you worked with others (see group grading sheet).  Next, you will grade yourself on how you worked in the group.  Finally, I will grade your participation in the group and I will grade your completed projects (your code of ethics and your presentation product).  See project rubric.  The entire project is worth 100 points.  Your code of ethics is 50 points and your project is 100 points.  (50 Points for the project, 50 points for total group interaction grade)

We have talked about these areas:

* Computer ethics and codes of ethics
* Piracy
* Copyright
* Security/hacking
* National and international regulation of computer use

What do you think should be a code of ethics concerning technology use in these areas?  What should be the rules you think everyone should follow.  Part I of the group project is to come up with a "code of ethics" or "set of rules" that you feel should be followed and justify each of your statements. You need to have at least 6 on your list.  You will look at a number of real cases and decide what your group thinks about each one.  You will use the discussion sheet provided.

Part II is to "advertise" your code or share your information through a team project.  Only Part I is due today.  Your project idea will be due tomorrow and the completed project will be due next week.

Team Product Ideas
Team products for assessment should include the following:

* 2 minute commercial persuading others to do the right thing

* Brochure or Poster to go along with your campaign

* Your commercial may include a Song or Rap

* Your poster or brochure may include a Poem

Things to Think About
Do these statements mean anything to you?  Should they be part of your ethics code?  Why or why not?

Privacy - I will protect my privacy and respect the privacy of others.
Property - I will protect my property and respect the property of others.
a(P)propriate Use - I will use technology in constructive ways and in way which do not break the rules of my family, church, school, or government.

What do you think of these statements?  For each one, think about whether it is true or false and why.

* All information, especially digital information, should be free and available to all people
* Breaking into computer systems points out security features to those who are responsible for maintaining them
* Hacking is a form of learning about computers and is harmless
* Hackers help monitor the abuse of information by the government and business.

Use what we've talked about in class, your Ethics study sheet, and any links below or on other Quia pages to help you decide what your group feels is important for students to know about the ethical use of technology.  You will turn in your list of at least 6 important points (codes, rules) you plan to "advertise" to your peers.

Link 1 has your group member assignments.  Link 2 is a copy of the group handout you will use to write your code.  Link 3 has the cases you will discuss in your group to help you develop your code or "commandments".  We will use links 4 through 6 when we start working on the ad campaign. Link 4 is the Webquest you will complete.  Link 5 is how your project will be graded.  Link 6 tells about group member roles.  Be thinking about which role you would like to play.

Use your time wisely.  Choose a typist to record your code in a Word document when you have completed your discussion.  Everyone in the group should help with the research and discussion.  Have fun! Please remember that many organizations are counting on YOU to help us get the message out in way that WORKS!
