Communication:  If you want to email me, make sure you copy your parents on all emails you send to me.  Also, I respond to emails during normal school hours which are 7:30-3:30, Monday through Friday. 

8/21:  Welcome to English 9.  Today, we will spend the period getting to know one another.  Also, I will go over the syllabus, goals and expectations for our class.  This is a reminder that we will take a  test on Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie and Speak on Monday, 8/27.   DUE TODAY IS YOUR SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT.

8/22-23: We will work on summer reading questions in class.  Bring your summer reading books to class.

8/30:  Work with a partner on the Viator Voice characterization - full class period to complete this - competition:  who did the best job??  Vote on Monday

9/3/4:  Present your Viator Voice characterization in class - Due on the 4th:  Personal Symbol - refer to handout for directions. 

9/4:  If time permits, we will go over the summer reading test.  I will return the summer writing assignments.  We will talk in detail about these papers.  We will focus on how to embed a quote into a paragraph.  We will also talk about the importance of following directions.  You will be given directions to sign up for Turnitin.  Handout on new writing assignment using Turnitin.  This assignment is due on Wednesday, Sept. 11th.  Homework for tomorrow:  Motif handout

9/5:  Motif handout due today.  Powerpoint - Speak - discussion of the tree symbolism   Letter 'S' symbol - group work.

9/6:  Speak:  Discuss the multiple settings in this novel.  Also, the point of view, the themes and the multiple meanings of the title.  Remember - SFNL paper due on Wed (9/11).

9/9:  power point presentation on Themes and Symbols - add to your notes on the Speak Elements of the Novel

9/10-12:  See film of Speak - complete the handout comparing/contrasting the film and the book (due the day after we finish the movie)

9/10:  You will receive a review sheet for Friday's test today

9/11:  Your character analysis of Scott Hudson is due today.  Remember, you must submit your paper to TURNITIN!!!

10/25:  In class, we will talk about indirect characterization, then begin reading the story.  Your job is to finish the story and underline any examples you find in the story.  Quiz on Monday on The Lady or the Tiger - quiz includes vocab words.

10/29-30:  Review study guide questions in packet.  Discuss pgs. 8-10 in packet.

10/31:  Students will determine who came out of the door based on their evidence from the story.  Students will write their topic sentence and decide on 3 pieces of evidence from the story to support their claim.  Students will also learn about activity for class tomorrow - sketch to stretch!!!

Homework for the weekend - Read The Scarlet Ibis on your iPad - answer the questions in your packet (pgs. 1a-1g and study the vocab words) - quiz on Monday - 30 points - short answer. 

11/1:  Students will spend the entire period working on their sketch to stretch. 

11/4:  Quiz on The Scarlet Ibis - Students will present their sketch to stretch in class - 5 extra credit points awarded to the sketch that is the best symbolic representation of the quote. 

11/5:  Work on finding evidence for your topic sentence using the MelCon graphic organizer. 

11/6-7:  Break into groups and work on one section of the Ibis packet - report your findings to the class tomorrow. 

HOMEWORK:  COMPLETE MELCON FOR TUESDAY - REFER TO THE LADY OR THE TIGER PACKET - ASSIGNMENT IS ON PAGE 21 - REVIEW THE MELCON INFORMATION IN THE PACKET AND ALSO THE MELCON POWERPOINT ON MY WEB PAGE.  IF YOUR PENMANSHIP IS DIFFICULT TO READ, YOU SHOULD TYPE YOUR MELCON INSTEAD OF FILLING OUT THE SHEET IN THE PACKET.  BE SURE AND TYPE IT ACCORDING TO THE MELCON FORMAT.

Be prepared to discuss and take reading quizzes on the following material.  EACH ASSIGNMENT IS DUE ON THE DATE LISTED BELOW. *****Over the break you should work on the body paragraphs - the first body paragraph will be due in class for peer review after we get back on Friday, April 4th - bring 2 copies - the remaining two body paragraphs will NOT be peer edited in class.  However, you should go to the writing lab for help and editing.
