Assignments:  PLEASE NOTE THAT ASSIGNMENTS MAY CHANGE FROM THE ORIGINAL ASSIGNMENT, SO CHECK THIS PAGE FREQUENTLY!!

8/19:  Welcome to English 9.  Today, we will spend the period getting to know one another.  Also, I will go over the syllabus, goals and expectations for our class.  This is a reminder that we will take a 40 point test on Of Mice and Men on Monday, 8/24. 

8/20 & 21:  We will work on summer reading questions in class.  Bring your OM&M book to class. 

8/24:  OM&M summer reading test (40 points) followed by biographical information on Steinbeck.  Historical information on migrant workers/the Great Depression.

Also due today - complete Chapter One questions from the handout you received in class on Friday.  You do not have to answer in complete sentences.  Part V on page 2 of the handout is not required. 

8/25:  Begin class discussion on OM&M.  Refer to discussion questions.  We will now focus on the depth of this novella - what lies beneath the surface?  Get ready to dive deep - Steinbeck is writing about more than just a bunch of migrant workers on a ranch.  Chpt. 2 due today

8/26:  Complete chpt. 3 for today - ignore the essay question

8/27:  Complete chpt. 4 for today

8/28:  Complete chapters 5 & 6 for today

8/31:  Discuss the paragraph on Curley's wife after her death  - note Steinbeck's choice of words which contrast her from our earlier impressions of her - ultimately ask yourself:  Is she a victim of her dreams? Begin group work on the themes from the novel

9/1:  Complete group work on the theme packet

9/2:  Group presentations of themes

Answer questions in class using your study guide.  Introduce MELCON PARAGRAPH.  Topic given in class.  Essay test will be given on Thursday  Paragraph requirements and rubric distributed

9/3:  Of Mice and Men final essay test today

9/4: Mel-Con introduced.  Writing assignment: due Sept. 17 - handout/rubric distributed in class. 

9/8:  Review handout for viewing OM&M film

9/8-10:  View film and complete handout

9/11:  OM&M film handout due today after by the end of the period.  MEL-CON graphic organizer due today.  Bring Orange Literature text to class.  Assignment:  Read the short story, The Most Dangerous Game - pgs. 52-74 for Wednesday.  Quiz on Wed.  Make sure you answer the study guide questions distributed today.  The vocab section is due on Tuesday.

9/14:  Orange lit book due in class.  Survivor handout discussed in class today.  I will return your MEL-CON graphic organizer today.  Work on your persuasive paragraph which is due on Thurs 9/17.  Papers that do not meet the required guidelines will not be accepted. 

9/15:  Preview for short story - vocabulary words and background information presented in class.

9/16:  QUIZ ON THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME + short story discussion

9/17:  Persuasive paragraph due today!!!!! MAKE SURE YOU ATTACH YOUR MEL-CON ORGANIZER + YOUR TURNITIN RECEIPT.  Begin background power point - notes given in class

9/18: Continue background power point.  Development of the plot/conflict and other literary elements - notes given in class + plot summary handout.   Assignment for Tuesday:  Read handout, "How Fear Works." 

9/21:  Continue with literary elements

9/22:  How Fear Works - presentation from one of our Biology teachers on our body's reaction to fear.  Make sure you read the handout before today.

9/23:  Direct and Indirect Characterization in-class activity

9/24:  Review game for vocab test (9/25)
You are not required to know how to spell the words, but you are required to know their definition and how to recognize the words in context.

Words on the test:  naive, condone, zealous, scruple, antagonist, quarry, suspense, futile, debacle, protagonist, palpable, amenity, conflict, affable, tangible, and cosmopolite.

9/25:  Power point presentation on the Elements of Literature (you must take good notes).  You will receive a handout in conjunction with the power point.  If you are absent, see me before school for the notes. 

10/1:  Due tomorrow:  Number IV from your handout.  Identify one simile, one metaphor and one verbal irony from MD Game that is not on the handout.  You will turn in this portion of your handout at the start of class. 

10/2: Today your group will teach the rest of the class your assigned portion of the handout on irony and figurative language.  Then, we will begin our discussion of suspense in the media.  Bring your book to class.  Assignment for Wednesday (10/7):  Read the Seabiscuit excerpt from your text (pages 122-129).

10/5: Review literary elements for test tomorrow.  Continue with suspense intro if time permits.

10/6:  Literary Elements TEST today. 

10/7:  Discuss Seabiscuit story (quiz in class)   Discuss Hillendbrand's use of suspense in her non-fiction story.  Complete the plot summary handout.  How does the film develop character, setting and theme?  Complete handout after seeing the film.  Due Thursday, 10/15.

10/8 & 9:  Continue film from previous day

HAPPY HOMECOMING - NO HOMEWORK FOR THE WEEKEND!!!!!

10/13:  Be sure and fill out your film packet.  Make sure you write legibly, or type your responses if you wish.  This packet is due on Friday (10/16).

10/14:  Testing - no classes

10/15:  Finish film - complete packet for Friday

10/16:  Group discussion questions in class.  No homework for the weekend.  We will begin a new story on Monday - you will receive a packet in class.  You do not need your lit. book for Monday & Tuesday. 

10/19:  Short story packet distributed in class today. 

10/26:  Gothic Elements in literature and film - take notes in class from power point lecture.  Discuss the key idea from our next story - REVENGE.   Is it ever justified?  When? 

10/27:  Continue power point on gothic lit.  Preview vocab - see handout for The Cask of Amontillado.  We will read this story in class.  Answer questions on handout as we read. 

10/28:  Finish The Cask of Amontillado.  Quiz to follow.

10/29:  View film version in class.  Introduce our next writing assignment.

10/30:  Continue explanation of the writing assignment.  Project introduced in class.

11/2: Review for tomorrow's quiz.  Be sure and study the following vocabulary words:  abscond, aperture, immolation, preclude, repose, impunity, subside, and termination. 

11/3: Quiz on The Cask of Amontillado.  View film version. 

11/4:  Discuss the writing assignment (handout in class), which is due on Wed., Nov. 11.  Introduce a new short story via power point notes.  The Open Window by Saki.  Complete the study guide for tomorrow.  Quiz in class on Thurs.

11/5: What is unique about Saki's style and structure.  Be prepared to discuss this story in class.  Assignment for Monday distributed in class today.  Read The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst and complete the study guide.  Make sure you answer every question.  Study guides will be checked. 

11/9:  Quiz in class on The Scarlet Ibis followed by class discussion using your study guide. 

11/10:  Discussion continues today.  Taking "Pictures with Words" collected today. 

11/11:  Groups assigned a section of the Ibis handout.  Prepare in class and present your findings on Thursday.  Rough draft of your paper due today, including the Venn Diagram and your Mel-Con organizer.  Your revised copy is due tomorrow. 

11/12:  PAPER DUE TODAY - MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS AND INCLUDE ALL REQUIRED ELEMENTS.  Presentations made today.  Begin review for short story test.

11/13:  Review for the test.

11/16: No School - STUDY FOR THE TEST!!  Go to the link at the bottom of the page to view my power point on The Scarlet Ibis.

11/18-20 - 23-24:  View the film Troy in class.  Complete notes as you watch the film.

CALENDAR FOR ENGLISH 9: November 30, 2009 – JANUARY 12, 2010
Note: Be prepared to discuss and take a quiz on the following material daily.  Each assignment is due on the date listed below.  Bring your orange literature book to class everyday.  Also, it is imperative that you bring your study guide packet daily to class so that you can fully participate in class discussion.  Keep this guide in your binder/folder so that it doesn’t get lost.  Packets will be checked for points on a random basis.  NO ‘late’ points will be given to students who fail to bring their packets to class, and no one will be allowed to retrieve their book/study guides etc. from their locker.  

Monday, November 30: Finish viewing Troy and study questions on the film.  Review how the war started and how it ended

Tuesday – December 1:  Power point presentation on The Trojan War – take notes. 

Wednesday – December 2: Quiz on Troy.  Calendar and Study Guide distributed today.  Examine Homer’s World – pgs. 1088 – 1093. Keep these in your binder and be sure and bring them to class every day.  Note: the calendar is subject to change.  Changes will be posted online.

Thursday – December 3:  Read in class, The Invocation, page 1104, plus the supplemental reading (The Invocation) at the back of the study questions.

Friday, December 4: Be prepared to discuss Calypso, the Sweet Nymph on page 1106, line 1 through page 1109, line 93.

Monday, December 7: Be prepared to discuss to discuss New Coast and Poseidon’s Son: “I am Laertes’ Son” and “The Lotus Eaters” on page 1110, line 1 through page 1112, line 55.

Tuesday, December 8: Continue discussion on New Coast and Poseidon’s Son: “The Cyclops, Part I”  on page 1112, line 56 through page 1117, line 243.

Wednesday, December 9:  Be prepared to discuss the rest of “The Cyclops” episode on pg. 1117, line 244 through pg. 1123, line 484.

Thursday, December 10:  Quiz on the entire episode, “The Cyclops”.  View episode on film.

Friday, December 11: Hero Project introduced today.  You will receive a separate handout on the project and an explanation of project expectations, rubric, and due date. 

Monday, December 14: REMEMBER TO SIGN UP FOR YOUR HERO IN ROOM 234 BEFORE SCHOOL BETWEEN 7:30 AND 7:55 AM.  NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO RESEARCH THE SAME HERO, SO THINK OF SEVERAL PEOPLE YOU FIND ‘HEROIC.’ 

Be prepared to discuss Circe, The Grace of the Witch on page 1124, line 1 through page 1125, line 45.  Then read and be prepared to discuss The Land of the Dead on page 1126, line 1 through page 1129, line 117. 

Tuesday, December 15:  Be prepared to discuss The Sirens on page 1130, line 1 through line 25.  Then, read the supplemental reading, “Siren’s Song” at the back of the study guide questions.

Wednesday, December 16:  Project status – view excerpts from film, The Odyssey.

Thursday, December 17: Be prepared to discuss Scylla and Charybdis on page 1132, line 26 through page 1136, line 205.  TEST COVERING PAGES 1124 THROUGH 1136 - MAKE SURE YOU STUDY!!! 

Friday, December 18:  Continue discussion on Scylla and Charybdis.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Monday, January 4: We have been off for two weeks!!!  Time to review Odysseus’ journey thus far.  We will probably view film excerpts of The Odyssey, if time permits.  Check on status of projects.

Tuesday, January 5: Be prepared to discuss Father and Son on page 1142, line 1 through page 1147, line 107.  Postcard Review Activity assigned today – due Jan. 11. 

Wednesday, January 6: Be prepared to discuss The Beggar at the Manor on page 1148, line 1 through page 1149, line 46.  Then read the supplemental reading, Penelope, at the back of the study guide questions. 

Thursday, January 7: Be prepared to discuss The Test of the Bow on page 1150, line 1 through page 1155, line 140. 

Friday, January 8: Be prepared to discuss Death in the Great Hall on page 1156, line 1 through page 1161, line 126.  Also, we will discuss The Trunk of the Olive Tree, line 1 through page 1165, line 91.  Final exam review sheet distributed today.

Monday, January 11:  Complete the worksheet at the back of the packet:  Characteristics of an Epic Poem. Hero project due today!!!!!

Tuesday, January 12:  Exchange your postcards – this is a review activity.

Wednesday, January 13 – Friday, January 15:  FINAL EXAMS


You are officially done with half of your freshman year of high school.  Congratulations.  Regardless of how well you did first semester, try and make second semester even better!!!!  Only 3 ½ years until you graduate.
