Communication:  If you want to email me, make sure you copy your parents on all emails you send to me.  Also, I respond to emails during normal school hours which are 7:30-3:30, Monday through Friday. 

8/19:  Welcome to English 9.  Today, we will spend the period getting to know one another.  Also, I will go over the syllabus, goals and expectations for our class.  This is a reminder that we will take a  test on Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie and Speak on Monday, 8/22.  Also, your summer reading assignment is due on Mon.

8/ 22:  SUMMER READING TEST TODAY ON SLEEPING FRESHMEN NEVER LIE & SPEAK - ALSO DUE TODAY IS YOUR SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT.  You will be given a short writing assignment today, which is due on Wednesday and it must be typed.

8/23-24: We will work on summer reading questions in class.  Bring your summer reading books to class. 

8/24:  Writing assignment due today.

8/25 & 26:  Students will work on a characterization worksheet which is connected to their summer reading - Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie  students should also complete their discussion worksheets.

8/26:  Characterizations due today - worth 24 points!!!!  In-class creative project with partner - time given in class for this assignment - No homework for the weekend!!!

8/29:  Continue working with partner in class on project - presentations will follow in class.

8/30:  Class presentations

8/31:  Work with partner(s) on finding literary elements in your assigned chapter.  Type up your results and turn them in on Friday.

9/1:  Class will go over summer reading discussion questions and review summer reading test.
9/2:  Literary elements from your assigned chapter are due today.  This assignment must be typed.  We will begin discussion of your next writing assignment - Turnitin will be explained in class.

9/6:  Due tomorrow - The elephant in the room worksheet

9/7:  Due today - Elephant worksheet - work in class on Literary Elements found in Speak - present findings tomorrow.  Complete worksheet on 1st and 2nd Marking period  - quiz tomorrow on this material.

9/8:  Quiz today - presentations on Literary Elements.  Discuss questions for 1st and 2nd marking periods.  Complete 3rd and 4th Marking periods for Monday

9/9:  Powerpoint on the novel, Speak with an emphasis on Motifs found in the book.  Worksheet on Motifs due on Monday. 

TURNITIN PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN CORRECTED - FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES ON THE TURNITIN DIRECTION SHEET - MAKE SURE YOU USE viator AS YOUR PASSWORD - NOTE THAT IT IS IN LOWER CASE LETTERS.

9/13:  Vocab worksheet due today.  Begin viewing Speak (the movie). 

9/14:  First essay due today.  Make sure you remembered to submit your paper to Turnitin and print a receipt, which you should attach to your paper.    Continue watching Speak during class. 

9/15:  Finish watching Speak if necessary.  You will then work on your Tree symbolism packet with your group.  Your group will design a different symbol for Melinda and you will provide a written explanation for the symbol you choose. 

9/16:  Group work on Melinda's symbol.  Individual work on your personal symbol due Wednesday. 

9/19:  Work on Melinda's symbol in class with your group.  Presentation of Melinda's new symbol. 

9/20:  Presentations and Review for final test on Sleeping freshmen never lie and Speak.

9/23:  Final unit test today.  Assignment for Tuesday (9/27):  Read The Most Dangerous Game (pgs 52-74) and answer all questions in your blue packet.  Quiz on Tuesday.

10/3:  Collect vocab homework.  Introduce the map project.

11/7:  Work on Melcon graphic organizer - type rough draft for Thursday.  You lose 10 points if you don't have your rough draft with you in class.  You cannot participate in the Peer review without a rough draft.

11/8:  Begin discussion of Gothic Literature - respond to the Revenge questions in your packet for tomorrow

11/9:  Finish ppt. on Gothic lit.  - discuss revenge experiences - introduce Cask of Amontillado with ppt.  Begin reading story in class.

11/10:  Rough draft of Tiger paper is due today!!!  It must be typed.  You cannot participate in the Peer Review if you don't have your rough draft with you in class.  Final draft is due on Nov. 16th.  We will continue reading the story in class.  11/11: We will finish reading the story in class.  Quiz on The Cask of Amontillado - if time permits.  If not, we will take a quiz on Monday.

11/18:  Blue Seabiscuit handout due today.  Discussion of What is a hero?  Was Seabiscuit a hero for his time?  We begin The Odyssey with background & introductory notes.  The hero's journey should be kept in mind as we navigate our way through Homer's narrative poem.  You will meet Odysseus - the hero of The Odyssey and all the trials and tribulations he experiences on his way home after defeating the Trojans in Troy.  Get ready for a fun unit.

Be prepared to discuss and take reading quizzes on the following material daily.  Each assignment is due on the date listed below.  Bring your literature text to class every day.  In addition, it is imperative that you bring your Odyssey packet to class daily so that you can fully participate in class discussions.  In addition to the readings in the text, I have added some additional readings, which are located in the back of your packet.  It is crucial that you read this calendar carefully so that you do not miss any of the assigned readings.

Monday, November 28: Return graded homework.  Introduce The Odyssey Unit with an explanation of the Trojan War.  You will take notes from my power point presentation. 

Tuesday, November 29: Power point notes continue today. 

November 30: Homework:  Complete introductory notes in packet on Greek History, Homer and the characteristics of an epic. 
Odyssey packets and calendars will be distributed today.  If time permits, we will view the film excerpt of The Trojan Horse episode.

Thursday, December 1: Explanation of Greek Mythology.  Read in class The Invocation, page 1104, plus the supplemental reading -The Invocation at the back of the packet.

Friday, December 2: Be prepared to discuss Calypso, the Sweet Nymph on page 1106, line 1 through page 1109, line 93.  Epithet assignment explained.  Epithets are due on Wednesday, December 14th.

Monday, December 5: Be prepared to discuss New Coast and Poseidon’s Son: “I am Laertes’ Son” and “The Lotus Eaters” on page 1110, line 1 through page 1112, line 55.

1/17:  Return graded Facebook projects and final exams.  Introduce non-fiction unit.  Powerpoint on non-fiction and propaganda techniques in advertising.

1/18:  Students will divide into small groups for their advertising project.  Assignment for tomorrow(20 pts.):  bring in an advertisement from a magazine and answer questions on the handout using the Advertising Techniques handout.
Also, read pgs 1-7 in Don't Eat This Book.

1/19:   Discuss pgs 1-7 from Don't Eat This Book.  View Chapters 1 & 2 from Supersize Me.  Share your advertisement with your group.  Turn in your assignment at the end of the period.

1/20:  Plan with your group for your Advertising project.  Read for Monday - pgs. 9-25.  Be prepared for a quiz

1/23: Reading quiz - work on group advertising project - also, for the week, keep track of what you and a friend eat for lunch - due Jan. 30th.

2/3:  Wrap up Supersize Me.  Introduce new unit - Values - homework:  complete the Values survey listing what you value most to what you value the least.  Make sure you ask your parents/guardians to complete the list.  Also, bring in a news article that connects to the Core Values Handout and complete page 1 of the handout.

Today, we will use the article you brought in and exchange with a partner - then complete the backside of the worksheet.

2/10: In class, we will explore the dilemma presented in the "twins" case - graffiti around the room - share your thoughts

2/13:  Values paper due today - return rubrics from letters to Morgan Spurlock.  Discuss how to write your letter in regard to the "twins case"  - you will be given the information, rubric, due dates for peer evaluation etc.
