FITNESS TESTING

Virginia Fitness Testing Program

The Virginia fitness testing program provides basic health-related fitness assessments to help students identify areas of fitness that are directly linked to overall quality of life. Health-related fitness includes the five major components of fitness directly related to improvement of health.

  1. Cardiorespiratory Endurance --- the ability of the blood vessels, heart and lungs to take in, transport, and utilize oxygen. This is a critically important component of fitness because it impacts other components of fitness and decreases the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

  2. Muscular Strength --- the maximum amount of force a muscle or muscle groups can exert.

  3. Muscular Endurance --- the length of time a muscle or muscle group can exert force prior to fatigue.

  4. Flexibility --- the range of motion in the joints.

  5. Body Composition --- the amount of fat versus lean mass (bone, muscle, connective tissue, and fluids). While some fat is essential for insulation and providing energy, too much fat can cause serious health problems.

  6. In addition to improving quality of life, health-related fitness:

    • increases muscle tone and strength;
    • decreases susceptibility to injuries and illness;
    • improves bone mineral density;
    • reduces risk of osteoporosis;
    • improves posture;
    • increases efficiency of the respiratory and circulatory systems;
    • decreases risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke;
    • improves blood pressure;
    • decreases risk of diabetes and some cancers;
    • improves self-esteem and self-confidence;
    • decreases body fat and improves metabolism; and
    • increases energy level and academic achievement.

    • Fit students feel better, look better, have more energy and are better learners.

      GSMS students are currently participating in the Health-Related and President’s Fitness Challenge assessment process. These fitness testing programs provide basic health-related fitness assessments to help students identify areas of fitness that are directly linked to overall quality of life.

      The Benefits of Physical Activity

Physical activity can bring you many health benefits. People who enjoy participating in moderate-intensity or vigorous-intensity physical activity on a regular basis help keep their body physically fit and working at optimal performance. Physical fitness keeps the lungs and heart working more efficiently and helps burn off excess calories. Exercise also improves muscle strength, muscle endurance, and joint flexibility.

CLASS REQUIREMENTS and GRADING

Physical Education is a required component of the Glade Spring Middle School Curriculum. The objective of the physical education program is to have all students leave the program with a positive attitude and the urge to be physically active throughout their lifetime.

PARTICIPATION is the major requirement of the physical education program. In order to participate, and for safety a student is required to wear clean athletic shoes (tennis shoes) to physical education class. Other than athletic shoes there is not a dress code requirement; however students are encouraged to wear participation appropriate clothing during physical education class.

Glade Spring Middle School Physical Education students are graded using The Participation Based Expectation System.

Hoops For Heart

Event

Glade Spring Middle School Physical Education students recently participated in the American Heart Association’s “Hoops for Heart Program”. “Hoops for Heart” is a basketball special event conducted to educate students about the importance and benefits of developing heart healthy habits, a sense of service to the community through volunteering and teamwork skills while raising money to help The American Heart Association fight heart disease and stroke, fund lifesaving research and educational programs.

The students collected a total of $774.75 for The American Heart Association. Ashley Weaver, a sixth grade student, collected the most money. Ashley raised $128.00.

All students who participated received a variety of gifts and rewards from the American Heart Association.

March 30 – 31

(During Physical Education Class)

Since 1994, Hoops for Heart has raised more than $50 million dollars for the fight against heart disease and stroke. Millions of students have “shot hoops” and learned about heart health and how nutrition and physical activity can help prevent heart disease and stroke.

What is Hoops for Heart?

It’s a basketball skills event program. It promotes community service by raising funds to support lifesaving heart and stroke research and educational programs while teaching physical fitness.

Why is Hoops for Heart Important?

  • Heart disease and stroke are America’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers and touch all of our lives.

  • More than 9.2 million children and adolescents (ages 6 – 19) are considered overweight or obese.

  • Overweight adolescents have a 70 percent chance of becoming overweight adults.

  • Obesity increases a person’s risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke and many other chronic illnesses, and it leads to higher healthcare costs.

  • Hoops for Heart raises funds for research and programs to reduce heart disease, stroke and their risk factors and improve health in people of all ages.

  • Participation in Hoops for Heart is vital to the American Heart Association’s efforts to raise dollars that fund lifesaving research.
