Hoops For Heart
Event
Glade Spring Middle School Physical Education students recently participated in the American Heart Association’s “Hoops for Heart Program”. “Hoops for Heart” is a basketball special event conducted to educate students about the importance and benefits of developing heart healthy habits, a sense of service to the community through volunteering and teamwork skills while raising money to help The American Heart Association fight heart disease and stroke, fund lifesaving research and educational programs.
The students collected a total of $774.75 for The American Heart Association. Ashley Weaver, a sixth grade student, collected the most money. Ashley raised $128.00.
All students who participated received a variety of gifts and rewards from the American Heart Association.

Since 1994, Hoops for Heart has raised more than $50 million dollars for the fight against heart disease and stroke. Millions of students have “shot hoops” and learned about heart health and how nutrition and physical activity can help prevent heart disease and stroke.
What is Hoops for Heart?
It’s a basketball skills event program. It promotes community service by raising funds to support lifesaving heart and stroke research and educational programs while teaching physical fitness.
Why is Hoops for Heart Important?
- Heart disease and stroke are America’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers and touch all of our lives.
- More than 9.2 million children and adolescents (ages 6 – 19) are considered overweight or obese.
- Overweight adolescents have a 70 percent chance of becoming overweight adults.
- Obesity increases a person’s risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke and many other chronic illnesses, and it leads to higher healthcare costs.
- Hoops for Heart raises funds for research and programs to reduce heart disease, stroke and their risk factors and improve health in people of all ages.
- Participation in Hoops for Heart is vital to the American Heart Association’s efforts to raise dollars that fund lifesaving research.
