Open Letter to Track Team Parents 17 April 2015

Folks,

I had originally planned to take our entire team to the Regional Meet at Red Bud High School on 25 April.  However, the State Band Meet is that day and we can only enter a maximum of two boys or two girls in individual events, and only 1 relay team per relay event.  Keep in mind that the overwhelming majority of athletes at this regional are in 7th or 8th grade because the public schools have dropped 5th and 6th grade students from their track programs.

Therefore, I have decided to take only a few select athletes whom I believe can compete at a high level, based upon the results from the two meets we have had so far.  Band members who are among the select few can still make some of the afternoon events, and I will let their parents know.

I am not saying I will not take a student who really wants to compete, but, on the other hand, you as parents probably have other things you need to do on the 25th.  This is NOT a mandatory meet.

The emails on students we are selecting to attend the Regional competition at Red Bud on 25 April, along with a schedule of events, will go out this weekend.

WILLIAM A. RILEY, JR
ICS HEAD TRACK COACH

2015 ICS TRACK TEAM PROGRAM POLICIES AND  PHILOSOPHY FOR ATHLETES AND PARENTS

1. PARTICIPATION IN MEETS…

a. …is dependent upon attending practices before the meet.  Unexcused absences will limit an athlete’s ability to participate in the maximum number of events (4), providing that they are qualified for that many events.
b. In order to be eligible to participate in four events, students must make…
1) three practices out of four before that meet.  This applies to our first meet on 13 April 2015. Note that there are five practices scheduled.
2) Both practices, or the only practice, before any subsequent meet.  This applies to all of the remaining meets.
c. Unexcused absences from a meet during the season will automatically mean that the student can only participate in half of the events to which he or she could participate.
d.      By the way, leaving early is fine as long as you get your work in with your field events and running events.  Same goes for coming later.
d. Determining whether or not an absence is excused is the prerogative of the head coach, athletic director, and principal as needed.

2. EFFECTIVE PRACTICE…

a. … is essential for both athlete and team.  The athletes must follow direction of the coaches and practice techniques and form while at practice.  This is a track team, not a babysitting service.  Athletes who refuse to cooperate or who disrupt activities will be asked to leave the team, no matter how talented they may be.
b. … must occur away from the track as well.  Athletes need to be committed to track, because this sport requires you to practice so much away from the actual practices.  We only have enough time to train technique, evaluate, and practice with the people who are present.  The rest is left up to the student.
c. … also requires students who support each other.  Any evidence of bullying others to undermine their self-confidence, whether at the track or away from it, will be grounds for dismissal from the team.

3. TRACK IS DIFFERENT…

a. … because it promotes self-discipline, self-reliance, and humility.  Except for relays, how well an athlete performs is based on how well and how diligently they have trained.  Athletes have to take the responsibility when they don’t prepare well.  They learn to admit what went wrong, make corrections, and pick themselves up.  There is no one else to blame.
b. … because only the top performers go to the Conference and Diocesan Championships.  There is no sitting on the bench at crunch time.  Keep in mind that a 5th Grader may replace a 6th Grader on the Junior Team at either CONFERENCE or DIOCESAN meets, and a 7th Grader may replace an 8th Grader on the Parochial Team in like manner.
c. … because athletes may end up learning a new skill that they  never expected to have.  (If a coach asks you to try something, give it a shot.  If you make the attempt and it doesn’t work, at least you tried and will never have to ask yourself “What if…?”)

7. So, to practice even more effectively the following schedule goes into effect tomorrow night (Thursday, 11 April)

a. JR Shot and Discus at 5-5:45.  Parochial shot and discus 5:45-6:30.  You don’t need more than that to get in the requisite throws.
b. JR AND PAROCHIAL runners go from 5:30-7pm.  We can now combine the running practices.  First, gives Mr. Prindiville more time to make practice. Second, those who run and do shot/discus can go early and then go to run.  Make arrangements to get from CMS to ICC – carpool?
c. I’ve asked Mr. Bernhard to update the monthly schedule.
d. I really don’t want to have a parent ask me about the schedule because you are not responsible enough to handle your own responsibilities.

8. I cannot put any of you in 4 events, assuming you are qualified in that many, unless you make all of our practices as opposed to going to a select game or practice. But just keep me informed—and of course, school events like Scholar Bowl are excused.

TO: ICS Track Athletes and Parents 27 March 2013

TURNOUT: On the one hand, we have a great turnout so far!  At least 55 students have signed up.

HELP NEEDED – COACHING I: On the other hand, I really could use some extra help with coaching.  Ricky Alvarez will coach shot and discus for this season because Bob Wooters’ back issues prevent him from committing to the program as he did in the past.  He will come to some early practices.  I would like to have at least one other adult there – preferably with some experience with either shot or discus – but that is not mandatory.  The reason – shot and discus athletes practice behind CMS and apart from the rest of the team.

HELP NEEDED – COACHING I: Ann Cygnarowicz has helped for years, but just acquired a new full-time job. As a result, there are only three other coaches committed so far --  Rich Southard for high jump/running, Tom Prindiville for long jump/running, and me. If Rich and Tom are training athletes in high jump and long jump, I will need help with the other athletes.  Without that help, then we will have to alternate the practices among field and running events.  Given potential rainouts, that does not bode well for training.  I could use one, certainly two assistants.  No experience necessary.

HELP NEEDED – TRACK MEETS:  I will also need parents to help record results, time runners, etc… during track meets.  This is especially important for the track meets at Columbia High School on 9 April and 30 April – we are hosting and have some additional administrative responsibilities.  Please let me know if you can help and I’ll show you what to do.

PRACTICES:  Mr. Bernhard has just updated the practice schedule.  Practices will either be at the upper parking lot of Immaculate Conception Church (ICC) or at Columbia High School track.  For shot and discus folks, they will practice behind CMS Middle School all of the time.

PRACTICE TIMES:  Junior Boys and Girls will practice from 5-6:30, and Parochial boys and Girls from 6-7:30.  I’m trying some overlap so that as one group finishes up, another is starting.  All the more reason to have additional help!

POLICY FOR PARTICIPATION:  Students who participate in school-related activities (includes the Gibault play practices already in session) will not be penalized for missing a practice or a meet.  Students who miss practice for non-ICS related activities will be limited in participation in the next meet.  Those who miss a meet for non-ICS related activities will be kept out of the next meet.

Thank you for your consideration and support.

TRACK TIPS:

THE WINNING RUNNERS DISPLAY GREAT TECHNIQUES WHICH ENHANCED THEIR SPEED

Arms pumping and away from their body, not clutched next to it (On the other hand, your body needs to be compact so that your arms aren’t so far way it looks like you want to wrap your arms around a large barrel.)

Faces relaxed, not strained – remember Mr. Kish’s lessons in the past about more energy coming from a smile?

Mouth open in relaxed fashion ==breathe!!

Shoulders relaxed – you should not feel your shoulders hunched up or your neck strained.

Running on the ball of the feet, not flat-footed –reduce your impact with The ground –less chance of injury –leads to a smooth, more effective stride.

Lengthen your stride – don’t look like you are jogging along in the park.  Push your legs out and cover more ground with each step.

Hands relaxed- no fists, no karate chops – hands open, index fingers lightly resting on thumbnail.  If your fingernail is digging into your thumbs while running, you are too tense.  Relax – get that energy going into your running.

Just a slight lean forward- look up and don’t look around – keep your focus toward the finish.

HOW TO GO ABOUT IMPROVING

Identify the area you most need to improve –we will help you here.

Practice to correct that area, then go on to the next.  Any improvement in any area will help you improve your time with practice.

All of these contribute to a smooth running style – good form will carry you when you are tired.

YOU CAN DO THIS – GOOD TECHNIQUE WILL SET YOU FREE!

You have to train and educate your body to assume the form automatically – practice, practice, practice even when you are not at an official track practice

Those great runners from the meet did not come to their technique naturally – they have worked at it.

Never be totally satisfied, even of you won your race – look to improve.

MEANWHILE, DISTANCE AND INTERVAL TRAINING CAN IMPROVE SPEED AND ENDURANCE. ALWAYS PRACTICE TECHNIQUE NO MATTER WHAT TYPE OF RUNNING PRACTICE YOU ARE DOING.

RELAYS

PRACTICE THOSE HANDOFFS – GOOD HANDOFFS ARE WORTH 1-2 PLACES IN A MEET.  POORLY EXECUTED HANDOFFS WILL WASTE ALL OF YOUR EFFORTS TO RUN FASTER.

Track can be a lifelong skill in order to stay in shape and will certainly help you in high school sports
