Sea Battle: Rōmānī vs. Pūnicī (the Carthaginians)
Rome first formed a navy when it took on the sea power Carthage in the First Punic War in the 260's. Having no history as a maritime power (being rather an agricultural society) the Romans, resourceful as ever, used Greek shipbuilders and their enemies' own technology taken from shipwrecked ships to fashion a navy. They then took the technology a step further by implementing the corvus, a hinged gangplank with a hook at the end, so that they could not only ram an enemy ship (the preferred attack method of the Greeks and Carthaginians), but also board the enemy ship, turning a sea battle into a 'land' engagement, where any Roman soldier would feel himself at home! Now it is your turn. Take on the Carthaginians as the Romans did in their first great sea victory, the Battle of Mylae, off the coast of Sicily. Have no fear, and Victoria shall be yours!
