Naval battle of Messina (Pēnsum A capitulī sextī)

During the civil wars (Caesar vs. Pompey, Octavian vs. Antony et alia), naval action became very important for political strength. Since Italy depended so much on grain from Egypt, control of the Mediterranean was essential. Pompey's son Sextus Pompeius had a fleet in the western Mediterranean that impeded the grain trade. Octavian fought Sextus to regain control of Sicily and its waters, but was defeated in the naval battle of Messina in 37 BC and again in August of 36 BC. Try your ships in battle as the wily Sextus. Bona Fortūna!
