"Y" means "and"; it is used when minute hand is on the right side of the clock. "Menos" means "less" or "minus"; it is used when the minute hand is on the left side of the clock. "Cuarto" means "quarter" as in a quarter of an hour (fifteen minutes); this is used before and after an hour. "Media" is used to mean "thirty", as in a half of an hour; it is always used with, "y," not "menos."
