Geometry Basics IV

See if you know the basic vocabulary of geometry, including perimeter, area, volume, symmetry, and shape movements.

AB
PerimeterThe distance around a polygon, found by adding the lengths of the sides
AreaThe number of square units needed to cover a region, found by multiplication
VolumeThe number of cubic units needed to fill a solid figure, found by multiplication
HeightThe dimension that must be multiplied by the length and width to determine volume
ExponentThe tiny raised number (a 2 or 3) that must be written next to the unit in area or volume
Line symmetryThe property of a figure that can be folded and the two parts will match
Line of symmetryThe vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line on which you fold a figure to get two matching sides
CongruentFigures that have the same size AND shape
SimilarFigures that have the same shape but are NOT the same size
AsymmetricalA figure that CANNOT be folded along a line so that the two parts will match
SlideAlso called a translation, sliding a figure in a straight line
FlipAlso called a reflection, flipping a figure over a line
TurnAlso called a rotation, turning a figure around a point or vertex
TransformationA movement of a figure that does not change the size or shape
ApexThe point where the triangular faces of a pyramid meet
TranslationSliding a figure in a straight line
ReflectionFlipping a figure over a line
RotationTurning a figure around a point or vertex
Complementary AnglesTwo angles that add up to 90 degrees
Supplementary AnglesTwo angles that add up to 180 degrees
