| Axis | The imaginary line that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole through the middle of the earth. |

| Common Market | A group of countries that allows free trade between borders (ie. the European Economic Union) |
| The European Economic Union (aka EEU) | A group of countries in Europe that act as a single country in some ways. Working together increases their trade power and improves their standard of living. |
| Population Pyramid | A graph that shows the ages and sexes of people in a population with the youngest at the bottom. The graph is often shaped like a pyramid. |
| Dictator | A leader who governs by force. Often takes power through a coup-de-tat. Usually tortures, executes and imprisons innocent people without cause or trial. |
| Democracy | A form of government where all adults get to vote. Promotes the most freedom and prosperity. |
| Fossil Fuels | Fuels like oil and natural gas which come from the remains of dead plants and animals. Burning these fuels causes the release of Carbon Dioxide which causes global warming. |
| Illiterate | When a person is unable to read or write. |
| Indigenous Peoples | Native people of an area who have been conquered or dominated by others who had a stronger military. |
| Industrial Revolution | the huge shift in the Economy of the US and Europe that occurred in the 1700's. Stuff was made by machines instead of handtools. |
| Gross Domestic Product (aka GDP) | the total amount of stuff that a country's economy can build in a year. In Civ III this was represented by shields. |
| Immigrants | People who move from one country to another - usually looking for more freedom or a higher standard of living. |
| Renewable Energy | Solar, Wind, Hydro-Electric. Ways of producing electricity without also creating pollution. |
| Natural Disasters | Tsunamis, Earthquakes, Tornadoes. |
| Potable Water | Water that is safe and clean to drink. (Remember: there is no such thing as "old water". All water is old. Very old.) |
| Time Zone | Areas or zones that use the same clock time. There are 24 of these zones on the earth. |
| Comparative Advantage | When one country can make or produce something cheaper than another country. |
| Outsource | to hire someone outside of a company to do a job that someone in the company used to do. (ie. Many good paying American jobs are being shipped overseas to places like India and China). |
| Information Technology (IT) | the use of technology to record and process information via computers, cell phones, satellites and the Internet. |
