Erastus "Deaf" Smith | A folk hero in Texas, with a county named after him. Sam Houston, who commanded the ragtag Texas Regular Army, appointed Smith his personal scout and spy. Smith captured important dispatches, and distinguished himself in the decisive Battle of San Jacinto. |
Laurent Clerc | A student at the Institut National des Jeune Sourds-Muets in Paris, his first teacher was Jean Massieu. Clerc later met Thomas H. Gallaudet and came to America to open The “Hartford Asylum” (today’s American School for the Deaf) on April 15, 1817. |
"Dummy" Hoy | Spent 15 years, from 1887 to 1903 as a baseball player. He played on a variety of teams, most notably with the Washington Senators the Chicago White Stockings. He led the National League in stolen bases in 1888 with 82 thefts. He is believed to have played an important role in the development of umpires’ signals. |
