| nationalist | one who is devoted or loyal to interests and cultures of a country |
| modernization | to bring up to date by introducing new ideas and ways of doing things |
| village commune | a group of peasant households joined together on land which is commonly owned |
| serf/serdom | when people were not allowed to leave the land that they worked on |
| bourgeoisie | capitalist class, business owners who employ workers |
| socialism | a political and economical system in which the workers own and control all means of production of goods. |
| Revolutionary | a person committed to making changes in society and government, often through violent acts. |
| tsar or czar | title of a male leader ruling with absolute power |
| autocrat (autocracy) | a leader having absolute power with no limit. |
| Land reform | Tsar took some land and returned it to the peasants |
| Bolsheviks | Majority part of social democratic party controlled by Lenin and formed in 1912 |
| Duma | national parliament in Tsarist Russia with very little power. |
| Soviets | special self formed groups whcih represented workers and peasants. It oversaw local government and ideas for the revolution. |
| Coup (coup D'etate) | an illegal overthrow of the government |
| Narodniks | a revolutionary group of nobles who were influenced by Marx and they wanted to change Tsar rule |
| Communist Manifesto | Document created by Karl Marx and Fredrick Engels that stated Communist Ideas for change. 1) workers had little power 2) Machines would cause unemployment 3) Workers should rebel to create change |
