Define biodiversity.The sum total of the genetically based variety of all organisms in the biosphere.
What is ecosystem diversity?It includes the variety of habitats, communities, and ecological processes in the living world.
What is species diversity?The number of different species in the biosphere.
What is genetic diversity?The sum total of all the different forms of genetic information carried by all organisms living on Earth today.
What is biodiversity as one of Earth's greatest natural resources?Species of many kinds provide us with foods, industrial products, and medicines.
Define extinction.It's when a species disappears from all or part of its range.
What's an endangered species?It's a species whose population size is declining in a way that places it in danger of extinction.
Define habitat fragmentation.It's when development splits ecosystems into pieces, so they are like isolated islands.
What does CITES stand for?Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species
What is biological magnification?A process where concentrations of a harmful substance increase in organisms at higher trophic levels in a food chain or food web. It affects the entire food web, but top-level carnivores are at highest risk.
What's an invasive species?They're plants & animals that have migrated to places where they are not native.
What is conservation?It's the wise management of natural resources, including preservation of habitats and wildlife.
