Unit 4:"Cells and membranes" (B) Vocabulary
Cell Membrane Vocabulary
|
| A | B |
phospholipids, | Molecule that forms a double layered cell membrane |
selective permeability, | The condition or quality that allows some but not all, materials to pass through a barrier or membrane. |
passive transport, | The movement of molecules across the cell membrane without the use of energy by the cell. |
diffusion, | The movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to areas of lower concentration. |
concentration gradient, | The difference in concentration or amount of a substance from one location to another. |
osmosis, | The difusion of water molecules across a semipermeable membrane |
isotonic, | A solution that has an equal amount of dissolved particles compared to another solution. |
hypertonic, | A solution that has a higher amount of dissolve particle compared to another solution. |
hypotonic, | A solution that has a lower amount of dissolved particles compared to another solution. |
facilitated diffusion, | The diffusion of molecules assisted by protein channels that pierce a cell membrane. |
active transport, | The energy-requiring movement of molecules across a cell membrane, going from a lower concentration to a higher concentration. |
endocytosis, | The uptake of liquids or large molecules into a cell by inward folding of the cell membrane. |
phagocytosis, | The uptake of solid particles into a cell by engulfing the particle |
exocytosis, | The release of a substance out of a cell by the fusion of a vesicle with the cell membrane. |
receptor, | A protein that detects a signal molecule and performs an action in response. |
cell membrane, | A double layer of phospholipids that forms a boundary between a cell and the surrounding environment. |
fluid mosaic model, | A model that describes the arrangement and movement of the molecules that make up a cell membrane. |
