Unit 4:"Cells and membranes" (B) Vocabulary

Cell Membrane Vocabulary

AB
phospholipids, Molecule that forms a double layered cell membrane
selective permeability, The condition or quality that allows some but not all, materials to pass through a barrier or membrane.
passive transport, The movement of molecules across the cell membrane without the use of energy by the cell.
diffusion, The movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to areas of lower concentration.
concentration gradient, The difference in concentration or amount of a substance from one location to another.
osmosis, The difusion of water molecules across a semipermeable membrane
isotonic, A solution that has an equal amount of dissolved particles compared to another solution.
hypertonic, A solution that has a higher amount of dissolve particle compared to another solution.
hypotonic, A solution that has a lower amount of dissolved particles compared to another solution.
facilitated diffusion, The diffusion of molecules assisted by protein channels that pierce a cell membrane.
active transport, The energy-requiring movement of molecules across a cell membrane, going from a lower concentration to a higher concentration.
endocytosis, The uptake of liquids or large molecules into a cell by inward folding of the cell membrane.
phagocytosis, The uptake of solid particles into a cell by engulfing the particle
exocytosis, The release of a substance out of a cell by the fusion of a vesicle with the cell membrane.
receptor, A protein that detects a signal molecule and performs an action in response.
cell membrane, A double layer of phospholipids that forms a boundary between a cell and the surrounding environment.
fluid mosaic model, A model that describes the arrangement and movement of the molecules that make up a cell membrane.
