Migration | The action of moving from one place or region to another. |
Climate | The kind of weather an area has over a long period of time. |
Erosion | The act of wearing away at land by water or wind. |
New Deal | Process to get people's jobs back. |
Drought | Long period of time without rain. |
Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) | President during the "dust bowl". This President ordered the CCC to plant a belt of trees from Mexico to Canada to break the wind on the plains. |
Dust Bowl States | (The Great Plains)Hardest hit: Colorado, New Mexico, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Other states affected: Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa. Soil even made its way to Boston, NYC, Chicago, Washington D.C., and onto ships hundreds of miles into the Atlantic! |
Dust Bowl | Years of overgrazing and over plowing had killed off the grass that held together plains soil. Windstorms carried the dry, dead earth into the sky. Througout the 1930's, the windstorms carried away the hopes of thousands of families and farmers as their cattle died, drought took over, and their lungs were filling with dust. |
Taylor Grazing Act | In 1934, Congress passed this act to regulate grazing on federal lands. |
Okies | Nickname for many dust bowl refugees because so many of them came from Oklahoma. |
