antherthe yellow, pouch-like part inside of the flower that holds pollen grains. Usually on top of a long stalk that looks like a fine hair.
chlorophyllThe substance that gives plants green color.
cotyledonFirst part of the plant you see when a seedling pokes its head out of the ground. Keep the new seedling fed until it can make its own food.
dicotA plant that has two cotyledons. Ex. = Bean
embryoThe entire plant before germination or the baby plant with the seed.
endospermFood storage area that surrounds the baby seedling.
fertilizationThe joining of pollen with an ovule to form a seed.
filamentFine hair-like stalk that the anther sits on top of.
germinationProcess when a seed comes to life.
receptacleThe part of the flower that the pistil and stamens grow out of.
rootUnderground part of the plant that help hold the plant up and bring in food and water.
seedA packaged little plant with food around it (endosperm) and a covering protecting it (seed coat).
seed coatThe protective outer layer of a seed.
sepalParts that look like little green leaves that cover the outside of a flower bud to protect the flower before it opens.
stamenThe male part of the flower. Made up of the anther and filament.
stigmaThe female part of the flower. Sticky bulb in the center of flower where pollen lands.
styleAnother female part of the flower. This is the long stalk that the stigma sits on top of.
xylemCells that move water in plants.
phloem cellsMove food down the stem to other parts of the plant.
monocotPlant that has only one cotyledon. Ex. = corn
ovaryThe part of a plant, usually at the bottom of the flower, that has the seeds inside and turns into the fruit we eat.
ovuleThe part of the ovary that becomes the seed.
pistilFemale part of the flower.
plumuleThe part of an embryo that turns into the shoot of a plant.
pollinationThe moving of the pollen from the anther to the stigma.
primary taprootA root with few branches that is very thick and swollen. Ex.=carrots
