A | B |
superior vena cava | Top vein that takes deoxygenated blood to the right atrium of the heart. |
pulmonary valve | Allows blood to leave the right ventricle and prevents backflow into the ventricular chamber. |
aortic valve | Allows blood to leave the heart and when closed prevents blood from backing up into the ventricle. |
pulmonary arteries | Lead from the heart to the lungs. |
pulmonary veins | Sends blood from the lungs to the heart. |
atria | Upper chambers of the heart that receive returning blood. |
tricuspid valve | Permits blood to move from the right atrium into the right ventricle and prevents backflow. |
ventricles | Lower portion of the heart that receive blood from the atria and then contract to force blood out of the heart and into the arteries. |
inferior vena cava | Bottom vein that takes deoxygentaed blood to the right atrium of the heart. |
septum | Solid wall-like structure that separates the atria from the ventricles. |
papillary muscles | Help the ventricles to contract to push blood out of the heart and into the arteries. |
bicuspid (mitral) valve | Allows blood to pass from the left atrium into the left ventricle and prevents backflow. |
pulmonary trunk | The only exit for blood from the heart that leads to the pulmonary arteries. |
aorta | Largest artery. |
