| A | B |
| ball and socket joint | A joint that allows one bone to swing in a circular motion around another. Example: shoulder and hip |
| bone | A kind of hard body tissue made of both living and nonliving material that forms the skeleton. It is one of the organs that makes up the skeleton. |
| cardiac muscle | An involuntary muscle tissue that makes up the heart and causes it to beat. |
| cartilage | A tough, flexible tissue that is part of the skeleton. It protects that bones at the joints by providing padding and preventing damage as the bones rub together. |
| compact bone | A very hard material under the periosteum that gives bone its strength. |
| contracted muscle | A muscle that is shortened and tighter. It pulls a bone. |
| fracture | Any break or crack of a bone. |
| gliding joint | A joint that lets one bone slide over another and allows a great range of motion. Example: ankle and wrist |
| hinge joint | A joint that lets bones move back and forth in one direction. Example: knee and elbow |
| immovable joints | Places where bones come together but allows for NO movement. |
| joint | The place where two bones meet. |
| ligament | A band of strong tissue that connects bones and holds them in place at the joint. They allow some movement, but not too much. |
| marrow | The soft tissue inside the shaft of long bones. The body's blood cells are produced there. |
| muscle cramp | A sharp muscle contraction that simply will not relax. (Also called a "charley horse") |
| periosteum | The membrane that covers the bone. |
| pivot joint | A joint that lets one bone turn on another. Example: neck bones |
| relaxed muscle | A muscle that is relaxed or stretched. It allows a bone to be pulled. |
| skeletal muscle | Voluntary muscle tissue that helps move bones. |
| skeletal system | The system of bones and tissues that support and protects the body. |
| purposes of the skeleton | This system gives shape, supports the body parts helping one to stand erect and protects the soft organs inside the body. |
| smooth muscle | Involuntary muscle tissue that lines the inside of the blood vessels, intestines and other organs. They help move food through the digestive system. |
| sprain | An injury in which the ligament at a joint is torn or twisted. |
| spongy bone | Softer bone beneath compact bone that contains many hollow spaces which act as shock absorbers when the bone is hit. |
| strain | An injury in which a muscle or tendon is torn slightly or stretched too far. (sometimes called a pulled muscle) |
| tendon | A strong cord of tissue that connects a muscle to a bone and holds them in place. |
