5th Grade Science Unit C Ch.2. Rocks & Minerals. Harcourt,Inc.2005.

Lessons. 1, 2, and 3.

AB
Mineral. To be a mineral, must have certain features. Is always a solid material with particles arranged in a repeating pattern. Also true minerals form only in nature.
Streak. Is the color of the power left behind when you rub a mineral against a white tile called a streak plate.Usually the streak is the same color as the mineral.
Luster.Describes the way of a mineral reflects light. Some minerals look shiny, like aluminum foil looks.
Hardness. Is a mineral's ability to resist being scratched.
Rock.Is a material made up of one or more minerals.Earth is made mostly of rocks.
Igneous rocks. Is a type of rock that forms when melted rock hardens.Four groups.Basalt.Gabbro.Pumice,and Obsidian.
Sedimentary rock.(1)Is a type of rock formed by layers of sediments that were squeezed and stuck together over a long time.
Metamorphic rocks.( 1 )High heat and great pressure can change the texture of rock-the way it looks and feels. They can form from any kind of rock.
Rock cycle. Is the slow,never-ending rock changes.
Organic Chemists.work with materials containing the element carbon. They develop new products or test them.
Dr. Mack Gipson,Jr.Structural geologist. Dr.Gipson tested core samples for the building of runways at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago.Dr.Gipson founded the Department of Geological Sciences at Virginia State University. He has done studies for NASA.
Fast Fact. Gold. All the gold known in the world fit in a cube measuring about 18 meters(60 ft) on each side.
Fast Fact. Rocks,Minerals.During your lifetime.you will use about 908,000 kilograms (2,000,000lb)of rocks and minerals! This includes food clothing, furniture, buildings, highways, and just about everything else a person uses.
Moh,s Hardness Scale. It lists minerals that have hardnesses from 1 to 10. A mineral with a higher number on the scale can scratch a mineral with a lower number.
Metamorphic rocks.( 2 )Some metamorphic rocks form when mountains are build up. SCHIST, GNEISS.
Schist. Is a metamorphic rock that has wavy layers of minerals.
Gneiss. Is a metamorphic rock that forms when schist is changed even more.
Sedimentary rock.(2)Over a long time, layers of sediments can form sedimentary rock as they are squeezed and stuck together.Four groups.Conglomerate.Limestone.Sandstone and Shale.
