| Stamp Act | Passed in 1765, it required the colonists to buy stamps for printed materials such as newspapers, calendars and even marriage licenses. |

| Townshend Acts | It forced the colonists to pay a tax on imported goods like tea, glass and paint. |
| Committees of Correspondence | It reported events and shared ideas between colonies. |
| Continental Congress | The group of representatives from the colonies that met to share information. It first took place in Philadelphia in 1774. |
| Virginia Convention | Ameeting of Virginia's leaders, it was held in May 1776 after the royal governor left the colony |

| Declaration of Independence | A statement written in 1776 by Thomas Jefferson. It said why the colonies should be independent from Great Britain. |
| Continental army | The American army led by Geoge Washington. It fought the British in the American Revolution |
| patriot | A person who supported the American revolution, on or off the battlefield. |
| loyalist | A person in America who sided with the British and opposed independence during the American revolution. |
| Lighthouse Harry Lee | A skilled horseman. He organized a group of soldiers who fought on horseback. They fought in North Carolina and Virginia. |
| George Rodgers Clark | A frontier fighter. His militia captured 3 important British forts in the northwest frontier. |
| John Paul Jones | An American Naval officer. In 1777 he took command of a warship at the Portsmouth. He raided British ships and defeated the British ship Serapis. |
| Richmond | The capital of Virginia (moved to here from Williamsburg). |
| Monticello | Thomas Jefferson's home. |
| Charles Cornwallis | A General in the British forces. He planned a surprise attack on Charlottesville. He wanted to capture Virginia law makers and Governor Jefferson. |
| Jack Jouett | A young Virginia soldier. He warned Jefferson and the others that Cornwallis was coming. |
| Yorktown | A town on a peninsula in southeastern Virginia. Where Cornwallis made his headquarters and the last battle of the American Revolution was fought. |
