Cumulus | Puffy, cotton-like with defined edges, below 6500 feet |
Stratus | Low-lying, flat, featureless clouds, usually covering the whole sky and obscuring the sun |
Nimbostratus | Dark gray, flat, low-lying, contains rain or other precipitation |
Cumulonimbus | Very tall, usually with anvil-like tops, associated with thunderstorms |
Altostratus | Mid-level, flat cloud, often covering the whole sky, sun can be seen through it |
Altocumulus | Mid-level small globular masses, usually white or gray |
Cirrostratus | High clouds, appear as white veil, often create halo around sun |
Cirrocumulus | Small, short-lived, patched high clouds in rows |
Stratocumulus | Low-lying, large, dark rounded masses, usually in lines or waves |
