Chapter 23 Ecosystems and Biomes Part II

AB
BiomeA goupf of ecosystems with similar climates and organisms.
CanopyThe tall trees form a leafy roof called this.
UnderstoryBelow the canopy, a second layer of shorter trees and vines.
DesertAn area that receives less than 25 cm of rain per year.
GrasslandReceives between 25 and 27cm of rain each year, and is typically populated by grasses and other non-woody plants.
SavannaReceive as much as 120 cm of rain each year. Scattered shrubs and small trees grow here along with grass.
Deciduous TreesTrees found in a forest, the leaves shed and grow new ones each year.
HibernationWhen some animals enter a low-energy state similar to sleep during winter months.
Coniferous treesTrees that produce their seeds in cones and have leaves shaped like needles.
TundraThis biome is an extremely cold, dry, land biome. Most of the soil is frozen all year.
PermafrostFrozen soil.
EstuaryA habitat where the fresh water of a river meets the salt water of an ocean.
Intertidal ZoneThe part of the shore between the highest high-tide line and the lowest low-tide line is called the intertidal zone.
Neritic ZoneBelow the low-tide like is a region of shallow water.
Boreal ForestWhere coniferous trees live. Winters in these forests are very cold.
Deciduous ForestsTemperatures vary here throughout the year. There are many different habitats here and Deciduous trees are found here.
Deep ZoneLocated in the open ocean below the surface zone. Where most of the water is completely dark.
Surface zoneOut in the open ocean, light penetrates through the water only to a depth of a few hundred meters. Algae floats in these waters and carries our photosynthesis.
