| font | A named set of characters that combines several design qualities, such as a typeface and font style. |
| format painter | A tool on the Standard toolbar used to copy character or paragraph formatting from one selection to another |
| formatting mark | A non-printing character, such as a space, paragraph, or tab, that is displayed in the text area. The mark acts as a placeholder and identifies when a formatting key has been pressed. |
| header | The blank area in a page's top margin. Ordinarily repeated throughout a document, a header can contain textual or graphical information to provide context for the reader. |
| indent | A way to aligh a paragraph's left and right edges without changing the margins for the entire document. |
| landscape | A page positioned horizontally so that it is wider than it is tall. |
| line break | A formatting mark used to end the current line manually before it wraps to the next line automatically. |
| margin | The area of white space along the top, bottom, left, and right edges of a page. Margins determine the size of the document's text area. |
| portrait | A page positioned vertically so that it is taller than it is wide. |
| selection handles | Small black squares that appear around a selected clip. Selection handles can be dragged to resize the clip. |
| shading | A percentage of color that can be added to the background of an object, like text, paragraph, or table data. |
| style | A set of formatting instructions that is sotred under one name. When the style is applied, all of the formatting instructions are applied to text simultaneously and consistently. |
| tab stop | A mark on the horizontal ruler that indicates where and what type of tab is et in the paragraph where the insertion point is located. A tab stop enables you to line up text to the let, right, center, or to a decimal character of bar character. Also referred to generically as a tab |
| thesaurus | A reference book available in the Research task pane that can be used to look up potential synonyms--words with similar meanins--and antonyms--words with opposite meanings. |
| watermark | A graphical element that, when printed, appears behind a document's text. |
| cursor | Symbol on a computer terminal that shows where on the screen the next character to be typed will appear. Cursors often appear as blinking dashes. |
| ruler | The bar that lets the user view and set the text line lengths and tabs settings of a document. |
| status bar | A bar, typically found at the bottom of a window, that gives the user information about the current status of that window. |
| border | A decorative line or pattern that is displayed around an object, such as a paragraph, picture, or page. |
