States of Matter Flashcards
To review solid, liquid, gas, plasma, kinetic theory, gas laws and principles.
|
| A | B |
| solid | Tightly packed molecules, can’t change position, definite shape and volume, has CRYSTALS! |
| liquid | Closely packed molecules, can change position, definite volume, takes shape of the container |
| gas | Loosely packed molecules, takes volume and shape of container, lots of energy |
| plasma | Gas and liquid like, has charged particles. VERY VERY HOT (the sun!) |
| examples of plasma | In stars, in fluorescent lights, lightning |
| Amorphous | type of “solid” has no crystals and gradually flows over time |
| kinetic theory | All matter is made up of particles that are in constant motion. The more heat energy they have, the faster they move. |
| Melt | go from a solid to a liquid, particles are gaining energy |
| Evaporate | go from a liquid to a gas, particles are gaining energy |
| Solidify/Freeze | go from a liquid to a solid, particles lose energy |
| Condense | go from a gas to aliquid, particles lose energy |
| Sublimate | go from a solid to a gas, particles gain energy |
| Boyles Law | pressure and volume, inversely related, bottle lab |
| Charles Law | temperature and volume, directly related, balloon in freezer vs over |
| Amontons Law | temperature and pressure, directly related, how engines work |
| Combined Law | pressure times volume divided by temperature |
| Archimedes Principle | bouyant force is equal to mass of fluid displaced, why things float |
| Pascals Principle | pressure transfers unchanged through a liquid, why hydrolics work |
| Bernoullis Principle | fluid speeds up over a curved surface, why birds and airplanes fly |
