Basic words about the scientific method and classification

binomial nomenclatureThe naming system for organisms in which each organism is given a two-part name -- genus and species.
classificationThe process of grouping things based on their similarities.
controlled experimentAn experiment in which all the variables except one remain the same.
dataThe facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through observation.
genusA classification grouping that consists of a number of similar, closely related species.
hypothesisA possible explanation for a set of observations or answer to a scientific question; must be testable.
inferenceAn interpretation of an observation that is based on evidence or prior knowledge.
manipulated variableThe one factor that a scientist changes to test a hypothesis during an experiment; also called the independent variable.
observationA skill that involves the use of one or more senses - sight, hearing, touch, smell, and sometimes taste - to gather information and collect data.
responding variableThe factor that changes as a result of changes to the manipulated variable in an experiment; also called the dependent variable.
scientific theoryA well-tested concept that explains a wide range of observations.
speciesA group of similar organisms whose members can mate with one another and produce fertile offspring.
taxonomyThe scientific study of how living things are classified.
