| file | The basic unit of usable information stored on a disk. |
| folder | A collection of files. |
| highlight | To change the appearance of icons, text, windows, and other objects, often by reversing the dark and bright portions. |
| icon | A small picture or symbol standing for something. |
| keyboard | A device for entering text into the computer. |
| menu | A list of commands. |
| menu bar | The row across the top of the Macintosh screen. It contains the names of all menus available in the current program. |
| monitor | A high-quality video screen for use with a computer |
| mouse | A hand-held device that, when moved over a smooth surface, sends information to the computer about its motion. |
| mouse button | A push button on the upper surface of a mouse. |
| pointer | A small arrow or other shape on the screen that is used to select or highlight objects. |
| press | To hold the mouse button down while the pointer is over an object. |
| select | To choose an object on the screen, often by pointing and clicking with the mouse. |
| title bar | The top part of a window. It contains the name of the window. When a window is selected, it is highlighted with stripes. |
| window | A rectangular area on the screen where the information in a folder is displayed. |
| command key | The key on either side of the space bar on the iMACs. |
| insertion point | A small, blinking vertical bar that shows where text will appear on the screen if the user begins typing. |
| scroll bar | A horizontal or vertical bar along the edge of a window which allows the user to bring hidden parts of a folder to view on the screen. |
| scroll box | A rectangular box in a scroll bar that stands for the part of a file currently visible in the selected window. |
| shift-click | To click an object while the SHIFT key is held down. |
| size-box | A small icon at the lower right corner of a window which allows the user to change the width and height of a window |
