Boom | The long usually fabricated, part of the crane that makes it possible to position the load sheaves directly over the load. to be lifted. |

Lay of rope | A term used to describe the direction in which the wires twist into strands or strands into rope. |
Load (dead) | The total weight of the suspended rigging. |
Load (live) | The weight of an object to be lifted. |
Load (total) | The sum of dead load plus a live load. |
Mobile | Capable of moving or being moved. |
Padeye | An affixed lifting lug on a machine or piece of equipment. |
Plow steel | A type of steel used in making wire rope that is tougher and stronger than the mild grades of steel. |

Regular lay | A wire rope construction in which the direction of the twist of the wires is opposite that of the strands in the rope. |
Sheave | A grooved pulley-wheel for changing the direction of a ropes pull. |
Sling | A length of wire rope, webbing material, manila rope, or chain with an eye splice or other fitting at each end used to attach to the object to be lifted. |
Strand | A group of wires twisted around a center wire, or core. Strands are twisted together to form a rope. |
Traction steel | A type of steel with a strength of about 180,000 to 190,000 psi. |
Wedge socket | A wire rope end fitting that uses a wedge principal to hold the rope in the fitting. |
Wire rope | A rope made from iron or steel wires that are formed into strands, which are in turn laid into a complete rope, sometimes called a cable. |
Wire rope clips | U-bolt type clips used to hold two wire ropes together. |
