| climax | is the turning point in the conflict. A character may do something to cause, or events may dictate some change must take place |
| conclusion | is the solution of the story (resolution) |
| point of view | is the choice of narrators or speakers (who is telling the story.) 1st person, the narrator is a character in the sotry (I). 3rd person, the narrator is a character who is on the ouside and follows along with one character |
| theme | is the subject or message being written about or discussed. A theme may be directly stated or implied. (central or dominating message) |
| flashback | a device by which the wirter of fiction drama, or film presents scenes or incedents that occur prior to the opening scene of the work. Ex, Julie of the Wolves Part II |
| personification | when an inanimate object, animal, or idea is given human characteristics. Ex. the screeching wind rushed across the barren tundra |
| simile | a comparision of two unlike things (except for a resemblance in one respect) using the words "like" or "as" ex. the clouds raced the sky like children running home from school |
| characerization | is the author's special way of explaining the characters in his/her story. We are told about the character's physical appearance, actions, feelings, and what other charerctistics think about him/her |
| symbol | a symbol in literature is an object or a person that represents an idea or an entire set of idea. Ex. the oil drum represents civilization. Ex. the plane represents death |
| foreshadowing | this is the writer's hints and clues about what is going to happen in the future part of the story |
| Irony | this is when a writer uses a word or phrase to mean the exact opposite of its normal meaning or what is expected |
| author's purpose | the author's purpose might be to inform to explain, to entertain, or to persuade |
