| Genre | genre is a type of literature. Commonly divided into three major divisions prose, poetry, and drama. |
| Historical Fiction | Includes real life facts about a particular time period. Usually the story is fictional but the facts about the time period are true |
| Fantasy | highly imaginative writing that contains elements not found in real life. These stories involve supernatural events, fairytales imaginary places and creatures |
| Nonfiction | tells real events with real people. Includes research, biography, autobiography, and resource. Includes prose, poetry, and drama |
| Mystery | A type of fiction in which some type of crime is solved |
| Autobiography | of the writer’s own life told by the writer |
| Biography | a form of nonfiction in which a writer tells the life of another person (real events, real time, real places, real people) |
| Oral Tradition | Is a story composed orally and then passed from person-to-person by word of mouth |
| Folktale | Originated among people who could neither read or write and they entertained each other by telling stories aloud--often dealing with heroes, adventure, magic or romance |
| Drama | a story written and meant to be performed by actors. Consists of dialogue and stage direction |
| Fable | a brief story or poem, usually with animal characters, that teaches a lesson or moral |
| Mythology | Stories that began as oral traditions. Collection of fictional tales that explain the actions of gods or heroes or the origins of elements in nature. Every ancient culture has its own mythology |
| Poetry | Poems use imagery, figurative language and special sound devices such as rhyme and rhythm. Some examples include Haiku, Cinquain, and Sonnet |
| Realistic Fiction | Books that have plots, characters, and settings that might be found in real life in the modern world |
| Journals | A daily, or periodic account of events and the writer’s thoughts and feelings about those events |
| Science Fiction | combines elements of fiction and fantasy with scientific facts. Many set in the future |
| Short Story | a brief work of fiction. Usually communicates a message about life or human nature. Human nature is commonly the theme of the writing |
| Instructional/Self-Help/Exposition | These genres include information that teach the reader how to do something. Some of these books are manuals, instructions, cookbooks, etc |
