Learn the following terms and you will find that looking at the plans is not as hard as it used to be...

AB
ArchitectOne who designs and supervises the construction of Buildings
Auxiliary DrawingsDrawings that are supplementary to the working drawing. (E.g.) Electrical plans, HVAC plans, Plumbing plans.
BlueprintA photographic reproduction, as of architectural plans, shown as white lines on a blue background (also referred to as "working drawings" and "construction drawings")
Construction DrawingsDrawings used in actual construction of a building or part of a building. (also referred to as "working drawings" and "Blueprints")
Contour linesShow the rise and fall of land elevation on a site.
CorniceA horizontal molded projection that crowns or completes a building or wall.
Detailed DrawingsEnlarged views taken from a drawing. Used to show an area more clearly.
DimensionsA definite measurement shown on a drawing as length, width or height.
Drawing TitleLocated with-in the title block, identifies the project.
EngineerOne who applies scientific principles for practical purposes in the design, construction, and application of efficient and economical structures, equipment, and systems.
Elevation (ELEV)Height above sea-level (or other defined surface), usually expressed in feet. Elevation (ELEV) is given at each corner of the site.
Elevation DrawingThe side view of a building or object. Shows height and width but not depth
HVACHeating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning
LegendExplains or defines a symbol or special mark on the drawing.
North ArrowPositions the drawing towards the North(compass orientation)
PiersAny of various vertical supporting structures.
Piping SymbolsSymbols for piping used to contain gas, oil, steam heat and conduit wiring.
PlanThe top view of a building or object from about four feet above the level shown.
ScaleThe ratio between the size of an object being drawn and its actual size. Also a measuring device used for lying off distances.
Sectional DrawingsA cutaway drawing showing the inside of an object or building.
Specification SheetAlso called specs. The written (usually typed) requirements issued by architects or engineers to establish general conditions, standards, and detailed instructions, which are used with the blueprints.
StructuralSomething made up of parts that are put together in a particular way.
TopographicThe physical features of an area.
Working DrawingsDrawings used in actual construction of a building or part of a building. (also referred to as "Construction Drawings" and "Blueprints")
BayA compartment set off from other compartments making up a given structure.
