All about Roman Numerals

Roman numerals are fun to know, and are still in use today. Learn the chart below, and have fun with the activities!

I - the letter I equals the number 1
V - the letter V equals the number 5
X - the letter X equals the number 10
L - the letter L equals the number 50
C - the letter C equals the number 100
D - the letter D equals the number 500
M - the letter M equals the number 1,000

There are easy rules to follow in order to master Roman Numerals.

1. If one Roman Numeral is followed by a larger one, then subtract the first number from the second.
- example: IV means 5 - 1 = 4, therefore, IV = 4
- example: IX means 10 - 1 = 9, therefore IX = 10

2. If one Roman Numeral is followed by one that is equal to or smaller, then you add them together.

- example: VII means 5 + 1 + 1 = 7, therefore, VII = 7
- example: XVII means 10 + 5 + 1 + 1 = 17, therefore XVII = 17.
